RED to release Hydrogen Two, better than One

It’s no secret that RED Hydrogen One phone wasn’t a huge success. It was announced, then arrived late, but it didn’t perform as it should. It didn’t have the specs that were promised and its cost was too high. Even worse, it was expected to excel in the camera area, but its camera wasn’t up to par. All around, it was a failure.

Jim Jannard, the founder of RED has, in a statement, put the blame on a Chinese ODM, the company that designed the phone to RED’s requirements.

The ODM’s responsibilities included the phone’s mechanical packaging and software integration with the Snapdragon 835 chip. Jannard said that RED had problems getting the ODM to finish work on the Hydrogen One.

This resulted in RED partnering with a new ODM, which is “clearly more capable of building and supporting the product we (and our customers) demand”.

The company has started developing the Hydrogen Two “from scratch”. The phone will most likely, then, come next year, at the earliest. RED will also release an improved Komodo module that will work with the Hydrogen One and Two and allow for “cinema-grade images at the highest level at lower pricing.”
