Android Google Chrome will receive HDR support
It is generally known what HDR (High Dynamic Range) is and what kind of brilliance the video reproduces when playing back some content recorded in the HDR mode. Unfortunately, there are not so many screens in the world that support this kind of technology, so there are not many content that users can see. Android supports this system from version 7.0 Nougat, but as we said, you need a screen with this kind of support to be able to display the content.
The novelty is that the Google Chrome on Android will join list of applications that support HDR, and some of them are Netflix, Google Play Movies, and Youtube.
One of the commits on Chromium Gerrit is to set the color space and HDR metadata in android.media.MediaFormat process, while the other draws VP9 HDR metadata from the video part and passes it to MediaCodec. Since the HDR video is now encoded in the 10 bit VP9 Profile 2, it can be played on the phone screen.
This will lead to higher video quality in the future. If your phone or screen supports HDR, you can look at the next video to see what this technology looks like.
