Buyers won’t spend too much only because the phone folds

Display market research company called Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) carried out a research about what would it take for users to buy a foldable device. It turns out that the mere fact that a device is foldable is not enough to push the end user towards it.

The research states that the market wil emerge for foldable phones next year, and that the manufacturers will sell an estimate of 3.1 million units. Sales are only going to continue to grow from there reaching 63 million units in 2022, with the total revenue of $8.9 billion.

In order for manufacturers to be able to do this, they first had to reduce the production cost of such phones. The technology is there for quite some time now, but it was sadly too expensive, and now it seems that the companies have figured out a way to produce foldable phones at only a fraction of the original price.

Unfortunately for them, the research shows that it will not be enough since, even in spite of all the production cost cuts, foldable phones are still expected to sell for around $2000, which is too much by today's standards, considering that the most expensive phones are sold for around $1500 today. This is quite a big jump in only a year, and we are only left to see how things will unfold.
