Introduction

The Belgrade based Tesla brand stepped on the market with a wide array of products. Alongside SmartTVs, tablets and AC units, their specialty are – smartphones as well. Today, we have a mid-range phone, the Tesla SmartPhone 6.2. Inside the factory box you can find: a warranty card, user manuals, a TESLA charging adapter, a microUSB charging and data transfer cable, screen protection and 3.5mm in-ear headphones. The device is made of metal, and has a 5” HD display which represents a great balance regarding the quality and the size of the screen. Under the hood there’s an octa core CPU and 3GB of RAM. In order to be competitive, this device is equipped with a 13MP rear facing camera, and a 5MP front facing camera. The device comes in several colors: Grey, Silver and Gold. Whether the 6.2 is indeed a “Sweet-Tempered beast”, as represented on the official Tesla website, feel free to read in the rest of the text.

Unboxing

Display

The display built into the Tesla 6.2 is excellent for this price range. It is an HD 5” IPS display. The device is equipped with FullLamination technology for a cleaner image, while One Glass Solution technology makes for a brighter screen. The screen protection is achieved through Dragontrail glass. The number of PPI is 294. The image is very sharp, although it would be even better with a FullHD display which is, however, reserved for higher class devices. The colors are great, which is an advantage of the IPS display. In the picture 4, you can see the details about the display of the SmartPhone 6.2

Hardware and OS

Tesla SmartPhone 6.2 is equipped with MediaTek MT6753 chipset. It is an octa core chipset, where the cores are clocked at 1.3 GHz. The cores are Cortex-A53. Mali-T720 is in charge of the graphics. This GPU is now a little obsolete, and it might underperform in some more demanding tasks. It still performed well in our gaming test, but it will drain the battery a bit quicker when extensively gaming. There are 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, which is expandable via a microSD card up to 32 GB. Speaking of software, the Tesla SmartPhone 6.2 comes with preinstalled Android v6.0 Marshmallow firmware. The system is clean, there is no bloatware, and the general feel is above expectations – everything works fluently.

Camera

Perhaps the biggest flaw of the Tesla SmartPhone 6.2 is its main camera. Although it’s a 13MP camera with auto-focus, the results are – only average. The details are average, but the color reproduction is bad, and the level of noise is too high. Video is captured in FullHD resolution at 30fps in .mp4 format, and results are again only average. There is also an LED flash below the camera, and the UI is simple and intuitive. When it comes to picture parameter settings, there are: ISO, exposition and Face/Smile detection options. The shutter speed is great. The front facing camera has a bit better results in 5MP resolution. Details are great, but the colors are still a little washed up. The front facing camera captures videos in HD 720p resolution at 30fps.

Connectivity

As a representative of the middle class, the Tesla SmartPhone 6.2 has a good list of connections. It is a DualSIM device and its hybrid slot can support either two nanoSIM cards, or one nanoSIM and one microSD card. Wired connection is managed through microUSB, and it is used for charging and data transfer. Both 3G and 4G networks are supported. It lacks the NFC connection and it’s definitely a minus.
The list of wireless connections contains:

  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • A-GPS
  • FM Radio
  • BlueTooth v4.0

Battery

Tesla SmartPhone 6.2 has a 2850 mAh battery. It is a non-removable Li-Ion battery. It doesn’t support fast charging.
The results are relatively good taking into account the hardware of this device:
  • around 260 hours in stand-by
  • around 20 hours talk-time

Final words

For the price, which is very affordable for the device of these specifications, the 6.2 offers really a lot. A good chipset with plenty of RAM will definitely secure the 6.2 to run smoothly even after extensive use. The thing that bothered us a little, but isn’t so bad taking into account the price, is definitely the camera. The photos are simply not on par with everything else in this device. The quality of the chassis could also be a little bit better, but again – it is the price that dictates, and for this price, the Tesla 6.2 is our honest recommendation.
