Hongmeng OS isn’t built for smartphones
Hongmeng OS was often reported to be Huawei’s alternative to Android, however, the company apparently has other plans. Catherine Chen, board member and VP at the company, stated Huawei never wanted the OS to replace Android – it is rather developed for business uses and IoT.
Chen revealed this at a media roundtable in Brussels, Belgium. The Hongmeng OS was recently trademarked and it was always intended for industrial use. Also, it has been under development long before the rumors about replacing Android.

It seems that Hongmeng OS isn’t as complex as mobile operating systems. It only contains several hundred thousand lines of code, instead of multiple millions like other mobile operating systems. Huawei’s in-house OS is also much faster compared to a smartphone OS as it has extremely low latency, Chen added.
This may be true, however, it might have not always been the plan. This news comes after the US government has already lifted the ban from Huawei, which means that initially the OS may have been intended for smartphones.
