Long awaited Mate 20 series unveiled

Last night Huawei announced their two new additions to the Mate 20 series, the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. These phones both have one of the best cameras on the market, perhaps even the best, and they are the first Android smartphones to host a 7nm chipset.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a smaller display compared to the regular Mate 20 – it got a 6.39" OLED panel that can show HDR content in 1440p resolution. Also, beneath this phone's display, we have a fingerprint scanner! Both phones are equipped with the new Kirin 980 chipset that uses new ARM Cortex A76 cores. This chipset has three clusters, two big A76, two small A76 and another four small A55 cores. ARM promised up to 75% better performances and up to 58% less battery consumption due to the new chipset. The Mate 20 Pro only comes in one memory configuration, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage memory.

This Huawei's machine is waterproof with its IP68 certificate, while the new SuperCharge technology with enormous 40W support is capable of charging the phone up to 70% in only 30 minutes. This phone's battery capacity is 4200 mAha, and Wireless charging is supported. Wireless charger has 15W power and it can charge the phone up to 30% in half an hour, but it is also capable of charging other devices wirelessly through reversible wireless charging process and act as a power bank.

The most interesting thing about these phones are their cameras. The main sensor is the 40 megapixel Quad Bayer sensor that is the same as on the previous version, while below it there is a 20 megapixel ultra wide sensor, and next to it is an 8 megapixel telephoto sensor that enables 3x optical zoom. Selfie camera packs a 24 megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture and it supports 3D facial unlock.

When it comes to the regular Mate 20, some things are different, such as the display. Here we have a 6.53" LCD display with 1080p resolution. The notch at the top of the display has the waterdrop design, while in the Pro model it's a bit wider due to the 3D sensor. The main camera in the base model has 12 megapixel resolution, above it is a 16 megapixel ultra wide camera and next to the primary camera there is an 8 megapixel telephoto sensor which enables 2x optical zoom.On the front side there is the same 24 megapixel sensor but without the 3D facial mapping.

The fingerprint scanner is here moved to the back of the phone, while the battery capacity is reduced to 4000 mAh. SuperCharge technology with the power output of 22.5W is present, and wireless charging is sadly not here. The Mate 20 isn't waterproof and it doesn't have stereo speakers. The chipset is the same as in the Pro version, and the phone is available with 4GB or 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage memory.

Mate 20 price tag in 4/128GB version is around 800€ while the 6GB version costs 50€ more. The Pro version will set you back 1050€!
